Good To Be Back

Hello everyone, It’s so good to be back.

For the past two years we haven’t been very active promoting small travel businesses with free adverts in Traveljunkies.

Instead, we’ve been looking ahead to when travelling gets back to some kind of normal so you’ll be pleased to know that you’re still here with us and your free advert in Traveljunkies.com is still alive and well.

We’ve made some changes which we think will help visitors better understand who you are and what you do, which in turn could create more traffic to your website.

So my message to our customers, old and new., is please keep watching as we roll out the new Traveljunkies Adventure Travel Directory and thank you for continuing to trust us to help you grow your business.

Best wishes

Marketing For Free

Many Businesses Won’t Survive The Crisis. Don’t Be One Of Them

The biggest mistake a business can make is to stop marketing, especially in difficult times.

Marketing can be a cost, but it doesn’t have to be.

Remember your customers are your greatest asset. Don’t ignore them.

Many businesses that survived recessions in the past have gone on to thrive because they were well placed to take advantage when the hard times were over, and that is particularly true in the leisure industry.

When people have struggled and had to cut back, booking a holiday is often high on their list. Will you be ready to serve them? If they’ve booked with you before, will they remember you?

I have followed Chris Cardell for many years. He is a world renowned authority on entrepreneur success and has run a webinar showing 10 ways to do marketing for free.
I would urge you to watch it.

His presentation included:

1.  Online Videos. Video marketing is one of the most effective ways to market your business, and it’s free and easy to do, even if you’ve never done it before.

2. Email Marketing. Send emails regularly, talk to your customers like they are your friends and don’t ignore the current situation. And use your lists.

3. Events. Do an event such as a webinar, an online meeting or a video call etc. There are several ways to keep in touch.

4. Referrals.  Don’t just let them happen, ask for them. People love to connect and comment. This is why TripAdvisor and Social Media channels like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are so popular.

5. Joint Ventures. Look for joint ventures not only in the leisure and travel sectors but elsewhere where other businesses could have access to people you want to target.

6. Telephone Marketing. When was the last time you called your customers and asked them how things are going? They will remember your call when they start looking for holidays.

7. Social Media. This might seem obvious, but how effectively do you use it? How often do you post on Facebook,. How many groups do you belong to? Do you have a Blog and post regularly? You have the time now that you’ve never had before.

8. Upsells and Affiliate Marketing. What can you add to increase the value of your product or service? Can you add or include other people’s products and services in your offerings?

9. PR. Articles or interviews in the media are great ways to get free marketing often to people you wouldn’t normally target. It doesn’t need to be selling but passing on your knowledge about things and places that would be interesting to others.

10. Split Testing. What is working and how can you improve it?  Testing is something everybody talks about but we never have the time to do it. Well you do now.

Is Your Blog A Business Or A Hobby?

Some of you use your Blog like a journal or a diary or a newsletter where you post about your travels, and other things, to pass on or exchange information.

Others use it to market or promote something. Blogging is a great way to help market or promote yourself or your business, product, or service. This means you can sell something online through your blog as well as using it for informative purposes.

These two distinctions determine whether your Blog is a hobby or a business.

Here are a few rules about using your Blog for business purposes.

The Rules Of Business or more accurately The Facts Of Business

  • You’re in business to make money. If you’re not, you’ve got a hobby not a business.
  • That means having customers.
  • You will have a website or a blog. Actually they’re the same thing.
  • Your website must be found. It’s completely useless if nobody sees it.
  • That means getting traffic to your site.
  • Your website must contain the words and phrases people search for.
  • One of the most effective way of doing this is by using hashtags #.

And of course there are other things you’ll see everywhere such as “You must have a list” and “Response time must be within 3 seconds” and “Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)” etc. etc.

What Does This Tell You?

First and foremost, your blog or website must be found, because that’s where it all starts.

This means three things:

  1. It must be relevant for your target audience
  2. It must contain the words and phrases people search for
  3. You must advertise and promote it in some way

The first two are down to you. Make sure you have a clear view of who your target audience is and that what you post is relevant to them. Aim to provide help, address and solve problems, save time or save money.

  • The third can be a little more difficult especially if you have  tight budget.
  • Post on Social Media, especially on Facebook and Instagram
  • Post on other peoples’s blogs.
  • Comment on other peoples blogs.
  • Join groups & forums
  • Pay to advertise on Social Media and Google.

But first get a free advert in the popular Traveljunkies website. It’s been going since 2002 and is completely free.

Who Is Your Blog Or Podcast For?

Reach is overrated

It might be the biggest misconception in all of advertising.

The Super Bowl has reach.

Google has reach.

Radio has reach.

So?

Why do you care if you can, for more money, reach more people?

Why wouldn’t it make more sense to reach the right people instead?

To pick an absurd example, you can use a giant radio telescope to beam messages to the billions or trillions of aliens that live in other solar systems. Worth it?

I read an overview that pointed out that one of the cons of Amazon advertising was that they didn’t have the reach of Google.

This is wrong in so many ways.

Reach doesn’t matter, because your job isn’t to interrupt people on other planets, with other interests. Your job is to interact with people who care.

Running an ad on the most popular podcast isn’t smart if the most popular podcast reaches people who don’t care about you.

Perhaps it makes sense to pay extra to reach precisely the right people. It never makes sense to pay extra to reach more people.

How To Market Your Business For Free

32 things you can do right now to market your website for free…

Thanks to  Christopher Ratcliff ,  the editor of Search Engine Watch, for updating and republishing this guide .

Four years ago, Carrie Hill wrote a brilliant guide on how to market a small business website. However as the world of online business marketing is a tumultuous place, the 2012 article was well overdue for an update.

So here we present a brand new guide, full of updated information and tips to give your online business a boost without the need of a credit card.

Please note: some of the tips below are from Carrie Hill, but have been updated to reflect any changes.

1) Set up and verify your Search Console account with Google. Here you’ll be able to monitor your site’s performance, identify issues, submit content for crawling, remove content you don’t want indexed, view the search queries that brought visitors to your site, monitor backlinks… it’s all good stuff.

2) Set up a Bing Webmaster Tools account and verify it, because it’s not all just about Google.

3) Update or create your XML sitemap and upload it to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

4) Claim, verify, and update your Google My Business listing. This is extremely important. It’s free and will enable you to appear in local search results for queries specific to your products or services.

5) Install Google Analytics, even if you have existing tracking software on your site. The program will open up a world of data and analysis which you can take advantage of. Especially if you monitor your visitors behavious on-site and see what content they love.

6) Send a press release. Yes they do occasionally still work. Here are a few of the best free press release sources you can use, as recommended by Carrie Hill…

 7) Send the press release to any niche media outlets that may be interested in what you do.

8) Find a niche social media site or forum within your industry and participate. Be helpful, provide relevant and useful information, and your word of mouth advertising will grow from that engagement.

Here are some examples provided by Carrie Hill:

 9) If there isn’t a forum out there for you, consider starting one.

10) Setting up a joint benefit with local businesses or other companies in your niche can help you reach new audiences.

11) You could also try cosying up to a social influencer. Although remember if your trading goods or services for promotion, this will need to be labelled as ‘sponsored content’.

12) Comment on other websites and blogs within your industry. Offer original, well thought out, sensible information, and be sure to leave your URL.

Chances are there will be a nofollow tag attached so you won’t gain any ‘link-juice’ but you could gain a bit of traffic and some credibility as an authority. As Carrie Hill states, “This is not blog comment spamming, this is engaging in a conversation relevant to your website’s topic.”

13) Write a “how-to” article that addresses your niche. Make it clearly formatted with lots of nice images. Google loves easy to read explainers.

14) Use an article to answer a question in your niche. Answer boxes are becoming more prevalent in SERPs, and this content is pulled in from the most authoritative resource. Here’s a guide to answer boxes that will help you become that resource!

15) Write unique meta title tags for all of your pages. This is still extremely important from both a user perspective and for SEO.

16) Write unique meta descriptions for all of your pages. This is again, extremely important. Make sure the copy is as appealing and easy to read for humans as much as possible.

17) Start a blog. There’s nothing wrong with getting the basics of blogging down by using a free service from Blogger or WordPress. You could even try using Medium for an extra SEO boost.

18) Make sure your Bing and Yahoo Local listings are up to date.

19) Use your Bing Webmaster Tools account to look at your incoming links. How do they look? Are all of the sites relevant and on-topic?If not, reevaluate your link building practices and start contacting any of the irrelevant sites you can and ask them to take down your link. A clean and relevant incoming link profile is important; cleaning up bad links is a necessity until we can tell Google and Bing which links we want them to ignore.

20) Make a slideshow of your products or record an original how-to video and upload to YouTube. Be sure to optimize your title and descriptions for YouTube. Once it’s uploaded, write a new page and embed the video on your own website. Add a transcription of the video if possible.

21) Try a new free keyword tool for researching website optimization. There are lots of free ones you can try in our expert-recommended list of free SEO tools.

22) Build a Facebook Page and work to engage those that are interested in your product or service. Facebook is a lot more difficult to master than it used to be if you’re not paying for reach, thanks to News Feed algorithm changes, but it’s still worth doing.

23) Start Tweeting or start doing it much better than you are now – it’s a great way to network with like-minded individuals. Also your Twitter feed will now show up for branded searches on Google.

24) Pinterest is still hot. If you have visually stimulating content that is relevant to the site’s demographic, you can find great success right now. Be sure you’re using solid practices foroptimising Pinterest for search.

25) Create a list in Twitter and follow profiles of industry experts you know and trust. Use this as your modern feed reader. As Carrie Hill states, “I don’t use RSS feed readers anymore. I like content that has been vetted by my peers and is worthy of a tweet or two.”

26) Try a new way to write an ad for a struggling PPC ad group or campaign.

27) Review your Google In-Page Analytics and take note of how users are interacting with your page. Where to they click, what is getting ignored. Make changes based on this knowledge.

28) Make sure your business appears in Google Maps and add descriptions for your storefront, locations, and nearby useful points of interest. Make your map public and embed it on your own website. Add links back to relevant content on your site if possible to each point of interest.

29) You can make your search results appear more attractive by adding Schema markup to the HTML of your pages. This can help turn your search results into a rich media snippets, adding star-ratings, customer ratings, images, and various other bits of helpful info…

30) Try submitting your website to Google News. You can check whether your site is eligible here. Bear in mind that you will have to verify your ownership of your site and make sure your using meta-tags correctly.

31) Make sure you website is mobile responsive and is of a decent speed, as these are both ranking signals. You can check both these very important factors using the Google Mobile and Speed Test.

32) Keep reading Search Engine Watch for more free tips and tricks. Yeah!

Want To Run Your Own Business?

 10 INVALUABLE THINGS TO REMEMBER.

1. ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS COMMON SENSE
…but common sense isn’t always common practice.  Never forget this simple statement.

2. YOUR IDEA IS WORTH NOTHING AND CUSTOMER SERVICE IS EVERYTHING
This is so important. Your idea, no matter how innovative you think it is, no matter how interesting it sounds, no matter how much research you have  done, it is worth nothing.
If you don’t understand your customer’s needs, if your execution is not close to perfect, and if you don’t have a great team, the idea is worth nothing.

3. IF SOMEONE TELLS YOU THAT BRANDING ISN’T IMPORTANT, RUN AWAY
People on the Internet have said if your product or service is great, your branding doesn’t matter.
This is wrong and dangerous. When someone tells you that, they are either ignorant or poor business people

4. NETWORKING IS PROBABLY 50% OF SUCCESS
You will hear a lot of people stress out the importance of networking in business success, but you can’t really understand that importance if you don’t experience it first hand.

5. WORK ONLY WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE PROFESSIONAL
Professionalism and delivery will help you stand out. It is absurd how many businesses are leaving money on the table because of their inability to exude professionalism.

6. WHEN HIRING PEOPLE, DO THE BEER TEST
Ask yourself. If you go out for a beer with this person, will you have a good time?
Does this person show empathy? Can they listen? Can they contribute? Are they open minded? How do they handle criticism? Are they eager to learn? Can they stay cool under pressure?

7. THE BEGINNING IS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART AND PREPARATION WILL SAVE YOU TIME
Your beginning will difficult. You will be really enthusiastic but once you realize how overwhelming the processes of entrepreneurship can be, you will start having second thoughts.
Running your business professionally is everything. That’s why you should invest some time upfront in studying the subject. There are a ton of online courses on entrepreneurship, marketing, sales, management, etc. out there. Make use of so much free knowledge..

8. SHARE YOUR JOURNEY BECAUSE THAT INCREASES ENGAGEMENT
This is a pro tip and something that has helped companies enjoy tremendous growth.
Sharing your journey allows your customers to get an insider’s view of your business. It demonstrates that you are transparent and confident about your product or service and it makes you look interesting and approachable.

9. DON’T WASTE TIME ON IRRELEVANT STUFF .
There is usually a huge confusion when people start. There are many things to be done and it’s easy to lose track of what really matters.
There are usually two methods that can determine a great start to your business.

The Japanese Method
Japanese people are notorious for their proactivity and preparation. The Japanese method is inspired by the Japanese mentality and suggests that before your launch you should spend significant time making sure everything is perfect.

The Beta Method
If your idea is something quite innovative, test it in a small segment of the market first.
Find a group of people who might be interested in the idea and pitch it to them.

10. IT WILL BE THE MOST DIFFICULT THING YOU WILL EVER DO IN YOUR LIFE
It includes risk. It includes losing money. It includes losing friends. It includes losing your mind.
A lot of people will question you, a lot of people will envy you and a lot of people will admire you.
At the end of the day, none of that matters.

Why Pictures Work And What You Can Easily Do

How effective is a simple picture like this?

The brain

A short while ago I posted this and had a lot of positve comments saying how effective a simple picture like this is.
So I asked these three questions

1.  Are you using your pictures to help grow the number of visitors to your website?
2.  Do you include a picture in all your Tweets?
3.  Do you have the pictures you need to include in your advertising in the social media you use?

And the answers I got were mostly YES to question 1 and NO to questions 2 and 3.
The solution for question 2 is simple – just do it, but number 3 isn’t quite so easy.
But there’s help from SproutSocial here …

If a picture is worth 1,000 words, and the average length of a word is 5 letters, it would take you 8 months worth of Tweets to tell the same story you could with one shared image on social media. So why not just include an image?

There are lots of tools for different types of images and many of these have free and paid versions, and all are listed in this document.

I recommend you start at the top and look at two Image Design Tools, CANVA and PICMONKEY (Nos 1 & 2 in the list) to see what suits you best.
Both have free versions which enable you to design and edit images for your social media posts.
There are many free image editing tools for you to start altering, touching up, or creating your own social images, and these are two of the simplest ones to use.

So click on the link below and get started.

Gavin Bate and Sasha Lebedev

One such person is Gavin Bate
(on the left with Sasha Lebedev)) an award winning adventurer and mountaineer who in 1991 set up the charity Moving Mountains which funds Children’s Homes, Rescue Centres and Schools in Kenya and Tanzania, and Medical Centres and Medical Volunteering in the mountains of Nepal and Kathmandu.

Whilst spending years climbing mountains including Everest and Kilimanjaro, Gavin became friends with many of the guides and their families in the villages of Nepal, Tanzania and Kenya and saw how these people barely make a living leading treks for big adventure companies, often relying on tips from tourists just to survive.

25 years ago Gavin founded Adventure Alternative which he still runs today building it’s reputation as a responsible adventure trekking and travel company.
His real passion is helping the locals sustain the trekking and tourism programmes the people of the mountain region of Nepal so depend on, by providing jobs and opportunities for local people..

Some of the local people
who now work for Adventure Alternative

To quote Gavin …

“Over several decades from 1996 we have invested money into setting up local companies in our most popular places like Kenya and Nepal which are then allowed to use our company name. Some of those staff have been with us for over fifteen years! We plough profits back into providing training for our local guides and cooks, drivers and porters so that they can have a long term career with us. We believe that this attitude and the loyalty it brings is a big part of what being responsible means, plus our groups have a more enjoyable holiday. In fact the feedback we get always mentions the professionalism and friendliness of our staff, most people describe it more as a family than a company!”

Read more about what the teams are doing around the world because it is really inspirational and makes you think about how important it is to the planet that we must support sustainable travel.

You will also find information on trips, tours and other opportunities in Europe, South America, Asia, Russia and Africa.
